Corporate Responsibility (CR) and Sustainable Development (SD) are two overlapping concepts that have captured our imagination as approaches that might reconcile many big challenges facing the world: the tensions between respect for the natural environment, social justice, and economic development; the long view versus short-term imperatives; the competing priorities of north and south, east and west, between developed and developing economies; the private interests of businesses and the particular desires of consumers, and the public interests of communities and civil society. These concerns overlap because they implicate corporate practices, state development policy challenges, the concerns and priorities of non-governmental organisations and communities. The intersections of these differing agendas generate challenges but also opportunities, and the potential for innovative forms of organisation and strategic approaches toward developing sustainable futures.
Our community is born of a common interest in, and concern for, helping secure a sustainable future. We see socio-economic development as requiring a holistic perspective involving a better understanding of the intersections between differing dimensions of society (environmental, social, economic, cultural) and a better understanding of tensions between the differing stakeholder interests of business, government, and civil society organisations and constituencies.
We aim to facilitate rigorous and challenging debate on all aspects of how best to achieve a sustainable future, and to influence strategy, policy and practice among companies, civil organisations and government. We seek to exercise influence through a number of mechanisms:
· Exploring ideas and issues in a series of international symposia;
· Reporting on and publishing research and policy initiatives;
· Engaging business practitioners and policy makers through our symposia and publications;
· Sharing and developing ideas and practice through collaborative projects;
· An online platform to showcase innovation and good practice
· A collegiate social network.
